Our History
WAAW
foundation was founded in January 2007 in response to a burning desire
to see more women of African descent healthy, educated and inspired
to participate in home and community building, by enabling mechanisms
for sustainable self-help.
The Articles of Incorporation of WAAW Foundation was incorporated
under the laws of the state of Texas, U.S.A., on the 5th of January
2007. The
Articles were filed in the office of the Secretary Of State as provided
by the general Not For Profit Corporation Act of Texas. In December
of 2007, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) determined WAAW Foundation
to be exempt from federal income tax under section 501(a) of the internal
revenue code as a non-profit organization as described in section
501(c)(3).
Support
to fund the organization’s activities and program is obtained
through private and corporate donations. The
Foundation has no paid employees. Administrative functions and organizing
activities of the Foundation are performed by the board of directors
and member volunteers.
WAAW Foundation recognizes that until the African family unit is
stable, it is an uphill task to seek good health conditions for
the woman, let alone educational and economic advances. The plight
of the African woman against prejudices and huge societal disadvantages
in often male dominated communities is still vastly unexposed, and
requires a strong and compassionate voice. WAAW foundation possesses
an insider’s perspective, and understands this challenges
as well as opportunities for social change, that if guided well,
could well change the course of the African continent and yield
economic and health benefits on an international level. It is in
response to this vision that WAAW foundation was established.
Since its inception, WAAW foundation has been working to investigate
viable projects,
build strategic alliances,
source for funds,
as well as recruit for and organize its establishment. The main
goal of the WAAW foundation is to achieve advanced education, sustainable
economic development and health for the African woman, thereby giving
the African woman a powerful voice in the community of nations.
We believe that the woman is the pivot of the family and the family
is the pivot of the community. Therefore focusing on the African
woman will indeed impact the larger community.
We believe in empowering African women by reinforcing independence,
funding change and enabling sustainable self-help mechanisms.
